Wayne Rooney: Top 5 moments v Arsenal

The striker has notched 10 times in 21 games against the Gunners, an impressive return after a decade in the top flight.

His first senior goal for Everton ended the Gunners’ 30-game unbeaten run in the English top flight in 2002, and he was one scoresheet again for the Toffees at Highbury later in the same season.

A move to Manchester United in the summer of 2004 led to much of the same for Rooney, who tapped home in the 90th minute to secure a 2-0 win on his 19th birthday. He also won the penalty for Ruud Van Nistelrooy as Arsenal’s 49-game unbeaten streak was ended.

Another goal, another 2-0 win for the Red Devils at Old Trafford – this time in April 2006, although United fell to Chelsea in the race for the title.

A goal at the Emirates Stadium in January 2007 proved to be in vain during a 2-1 defeat, although Sir Alex Ferguson’s side did lift the league title at the end of the season.

Rooney struck again in February 2008 during an emphatic 4-0 win in the FA Cup fifth round – the run would end away at eventual winners Portsmouth in the quarter-finals.

Rooney led the Manchester United fightback in August 2009, with the 78-cap England international scoring from the spot after Andrey Arshavin had put the visitors in-front at Old Trafford. An Abou Diaby own goal secured a 2-1 win.

United’s return trip to north London went even better in the New Year, with Rooney scoring on a beautiful counter-attack in an emphatic 3-1 win.

Rooney scored again against the Gunners the following year, this time in the FA Cup sixth round during a 2-0 win, although semi-final agony followed with a defeat to Manchester City.

Last season’s 8-2 rout might have made up for that however, with Rooney notching a hat-trick – the third from the penalty spot – to humiliate Arsene Wenger’s side at the start of the season.
